VESSEL SAFETY CHECK

A vessel safety check is a service offered by the Coast Guard free of charge to assist you, the boat owner, in knowing that your vessel meets federal and state safety standards. And, in the case of an emergency, that your boat is equipped with the necessary items to save lives and summon help.

Ask yourself this question, "would I allow my child, spouse, or parent to get into a car that had faulty breaks, lights that didn't work, or any number of other system failures?"  The answer is probably a resounding "No!"

Now ask yourself this question, "Would you allow this same family member to take your boat out on the water without checking to make sure that everything was as safe as it could be?"

Items checked include life jackets, registration and numbering, navigation lights, ventilation, fire extinguishers, distress signals and battery covers and connections.

What if you don't pass the first check?  No problem, you'll be given a copy of the check-off list showing what needs correcting.  After you have corrected the items, call the exam-iner and have a new check done.  It's that simple.
